A sharpening stone is used to maintain a chamfer or bevel on your mirror during the rough grinding process. This reduces the risk of getting chips or cracks around the edges. By the end of the rough grinding stage you should have a well defined bevel. Working on the bevel past this point will endanger your mirror surface to scratches.
When beveling your mirror you must keep the mirror and sharpening stone wet. This prevents glass dust from entering your lungs as your grind the edges.
